Visiting the Wayfarers Chapel (July 23)

I'm jumping around a bit with these blog postings because I didn't want to get too far behind.  And some of our shorter "adventures" are just quicker to write about than others.  So here's another recent one from last month that I didn't get a chance to post yet.  It was a quick visit to the Wayfarers Chapel.  We have driven by it so many times these past, almost 4 years now that we've lived here in SoCal.  And I finally told the boys we are visiting the Chapel - with or without Daddy!

And so off we went, without Bobby.  I think the main significant detail about the Wayfarers Chapel is that it was built by Lloyd Wright, who is the son of the famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright.  It was designed in the late 1940s and was built between 1949 and 1951.  Wright is known for incorporating the natural landscape into his design and also featuring lots of geometric designs, as you will see in some of the photos we have taken.

So here is it... as you're driving up to it.  It really isn't big and pretty plain looking:

Boys are already happily running along the water fountain.  Just glad neither one fell in:
Pathway to the entrance of the Chapel.  So pretty with all the trees:
As we approach the entrance of the Chapel... so pretty with lots of light coming in.  Geometric lines!
These boys are so silly with their faces.  Ha ha!
There was actually a wedding rehearsal going on, so we got shooed out for a few minutes.  Supposedly there were 800 weddings at the Chapel the year before Covid hit.  We asked the Visitor Center and I guess there are about 4-5 time slots every weekend.  Yikes!

Anyhow, we were happy to check out this view while we waited for the rehearsal to finish:
Okay, all clear!  I love how the Chapel has plants along all the side wall.  Definitely feels like they are bringing the nature in as well:
There was a small little fountain in the Chapel:
Not sure if you can see it, but the Lord's Prayer is actually etched on the steps.  That must have taken some time and precision!
The Chapel is simple yet beautiful:
We tried one more we-fie but it didn't work so well with the lighting:
There,... much better!
Back outside, here's the bell tower that we saw from the street earlier:
The view is just breathtaking:
Although the noise from the road below is not so nice! Not like it mattered to the boys:
One artist setting up in one corner:
The boys are just still in their own little world:
Other than the street noise, the grounds were nice and quiet and surprisingly larger than I had expected:
Charlie took a photo of a bunny that he had spotted over a wall:
Here's another artist setting up.  Do you spot one of the Pridgen boys??!
There's Graham! Ha ha!
I'm just going to "paint" my photo through my phone lens vs painting on paper.  Here's one with the boys (Graham - left; Charlie - right):
And one without the boys. The darkness/lack of lighting around the walls almost makes the photo look like it's in a photo frame :-)
Okay, almost time to go home!  Funny enough, we probably spent about 45 minutes here.  And I know this because we heard the bells ring 3 times every 15 minutes.  But of course, time to climb some trees first:
And I'm glad we didn't fall into the ocean today.  Supposedly the previous Visitor Center fell into the Pacific Ocean back in the 1960s during a landslide. Yikes!!!
