But before we get to the airport, we decided to try this new place called The Hangar for dinner. It's like a collection of restaurants in a building that basically looks like a plane hangar. Cool!
Of course, the first thing the boys noticed was this gelato place. Graham is really good at taking these panorama photos on my phone. I still haven't quite figured it out yet. Ha ha!
Graham and Charlie were obviously both eyeing all of these for a long, so it was pretty much inevitable that there was gelato in their future:
I had a bowl of rice with veggies, bulgogi, and kimchi. Spicy! But yummy :-)
Bobby had a Vietnamese meal called Banh Mi, which is a sandwich/French bread with veggies and tofu. Normally more so with meat but Bobby has been trying hard to stay Vegan. Kudos to Bobby!
There were lots of old black and white photos above the restaurants on the history of aviation in Long Beach. Job well done on this place!
Here is actually the front entrance. Do you spot Graham?
There are lots of space out here for the kids to run around. We will have to sit outside once it gets a bit warmer:
And ok... time to drop Bobby off at the airport! Wait... this is it??!
We actually drove around the airport 3x because we kept missing the entrance into the parking lot. And we literally did that in less than 5 minutes! I think Bobby was just having fun at this point because in 5 minutes, he would probably have only driven 10ft around the LAX airport:
This never gets old... dragging the boys on the suitcases:
Looks like Graham is now somewhat strong enough to drag Charlie around. I wonder how much longer they can still do this for??!
The Long Beach airport is really super small!!! There is a neat tile mosaic on pretty much the entire floor/space with the entire world map. I should have taken a photo of that, but I was too excited when I found the map of Malaysia! Teaching the boys where my hometown of Kota Kinabalu is. Not exact but they were pretty close :-)
I think the tile work is so amazing! Especially when this was probably all done back in 1897??! At least that's what it says on this mosaic!
On the way up the stairs, I thought this poster was so neat. 1910!
Who doesn't like the lime-light??! Yes, that is Charlie! LOL!!!
Upstairs is almost like a museum with articles and artifacts of people that were involved at Long Beach airport. Most of it was of Earl Daugherty:
Here is an interesting read about the man on Findagrave.com. Daugherty was basically a pioneer in Long Beach - having his own airfield and operating a school, exhibitions, and transportation. Check out this stunt in the photograph below. Yikes!
Daugherty unfortunately died while performing a barrel roll in 1928. He was only 42 years old.
There were other photos as well, commemorating women in the flying industry. This one of Gladys O'Donnel. She was Long Beach's first woman pilot:
So much history here! And then, we come back to Bobby getting on the airplane. Do you remember the times when you actually had to walk up the stairs to get to the airplane? Well, that's how you do it here at Long Beach! Bobby said it felt like he was getting into his own private jet :-)
The next day, in San Jose... he is welcomed into the new company with his own mug! So sweet!!!
Bobby obviously enjoys sitting by the window and taking lots of photos:
I believe this one is of Catalina Island:
Well, everything and I mean EVERYTHING is at a standstill right now. Welcome... Coronovirus!!! Bob's company had put a travel ban a couple of weeks ago and now the boys' school has shut down until the end of Spring Break (April 6). I am assuming this pandemic might last longer so who knows when the boys will actually physically get back to school! In the meantime, all zoos and museums in Los Angeles have closed. Schools in LA District will close on Monday. Little League Baseball has been canceled for the boys. And we were so excited for it! I did capture this photo of the boys during their photo-taking day last weekend. They both look so cheeky :-D
Such a shame that their league is now canceled as they were both so excited to play! At least they did get one official game each. In the meantime, all the professional sports - soccer, ice hockey, basketball, and golf has all been canceled/postponed until further notice. Needless to say, it's been very quiet in the house since there is no golf to watch on TV! Boooo hoo...!!! :-(
I believe things are only going to get worse before it gets better. I am glad I had gone out to buy some groceries to stock up 2-3 weeks ago and am not out there panic-buying. From what I've heard, shelves are almost all empty! This is a photo of taken by a friend of mine at Costco in San Jose (where the virus had reached before us). Unbelievable! It's probably more empty now:
We did venture into Costco to find toilet paper as we actually needed some. I was unsuccessful the first trip but on the next trip, we actually did get there at the right time! Just so glad people were civilized about the whole situation - lining up in an orderly fashion:
I have not yet ventured back into our Costco since that day but I have heard that lines are super long. We do need to get some usual things so we'll see what happens later this week when we do go out there! Wish us luck!!!
